Referred to as the Venice of the East by travellers from across the
world, this backwater country with the Arabian Sea on the west and a
vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscrossing
it, Alappuzha is immersed in natural beauty. In the maritime history
of Kerala, this unique destination enjoys a unique position due to
its proximity to the sea.
Alappuzha, which once was a trade centre, has now grown as a
backwater tourist destination. The famous boat races which take

industry. Kuttanad, known as the Rice Bowl of Kerala with its lush
paddy fields is a uni que
attraction. It is one of the few places in the world where farming
is done below sea level. Pathiramanal, a small island on the
backwaters of Alappuzha, is a haven for hundreds of rare birds
migrating from different parts of the world. This is a major
attraction for tourists from all over the world.
