Kerala State Co-operative Federation
for Fisheries Development Ltd (Matsyafed) has launched an
aqua tourism project at its Palaikari farm in Chembu near
Vaikom. The 125-acre fish/prawn farm in Palaikari padasekharam
is located at a distance of 22 km from Kochi and 12 km from
Vaikom.
Mr. S. Sharma, Minister for Fisheries, Government of Kerala,
inaugurated the initiative on December 17, 2009. Commenting
on the project, Matsyafed director board member Mr. K.K. Ramesan,
Palaikari farm manager Mr. K.C. Sivanandan and Matsyafed district
council member Mr. P. T. Thomas said that the Palaikari farm
on the banks of the Vembanad Lake held immense potential for
the venture and might emerge as a front runner in the promotion
of aqua tourism in the district and a major eco farm tourism
centre of the State. Mr. K.C. Sivanandan said that similar
Matsyafed projects at Njarakkal and Malippuram were attracting
a large number of tourists.
Well-known for its beautiful natural settings, lush coconut
groves in the bund area and an abundant variety of fish, the
aqua park adds to the charm of the Palaikari farm which aims
at attracting mainly aiming local and domestic tourists. One
can spend a day at the farm from 10 am to 6 pm schedule. Apart
from boating and other activities, highlights include delicious
local cuisine, a feast of fish delicacies, tender coconut
ice cream and snacks. The entry fee for a whole day is Rs.125
for grown-ups and Rs.100 for children in the age group of
five to 12.
