“Children with cleft lip and cleft palate who are given timely surgical treatment can become perfectly normal,” says Dr. Padmakumar, Head of the Department Plastic Surgery, Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram.
Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute offers free surgery for children with oral-facial clefts in its special treatment unit.
Dr. Padmakumar says that special care is needed for the children who have these problems and special care should be taken for immunisation at the right time. They can occur if the mother contracts a viral infection during the first three months of pregnancy or because of some medication that she took during this period. Children born to the parents with oral-facial clefts are also prone to developing similar problems. The clefts can be cured if the surgery is conducted before the baby is six months old and this will also help in development of teeth in the proper way.
The surgery team members include ENT specialists, paediatric specialists, anaesthesiologists, dental specialists and speech therapists. The OP functions all days from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. at the plastic surgery unit of the hospital on all days except Thursday and Sunday.
