As part of its attempt to break the round-the-world speed record, Earthrace, the planet's fastest eco-boat, arrived at Cochin Port on June 14. The local residents got to see the unique boat when it stopped for a few hours to refuel.
Earthrace is an incredible 78 ft. wave-piercing trimaran that runs exclusively on biodiesel and has a net zero carbon footprint, making it one of the world's most environment-friendly powerboats. The boat has many additional ‘green’ credentials, such as low-emission engines, non-toxic anti-foul and efficient hull design.
Skipper Mr. Pete Bethune and his crew set off from Sagunto, Spain on April 27, 2008 in an attempt to break the round-the-world speed record. The route has taken the boat across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans as it thundered 24,000 nautical miles along the planet's circumference at a maximum speed of 40 knots. Earthrace is on track to smash the world record set by Cable and Wireless in 1998, making it the first boat to break the record using only renewable fuel.
The boat has many additional green credentials, such as low-emission engines, non-toxic anti-foul and efficient hull design.
“We aim to show the world that the best technology can also be sustainable” said Mr. Bethune, who auctioned off his home to fund the GBP 1.5m project. “We are hoping that Earthrace stopping here along the race route will be a chance for the people of India to see an example of a vehicle that is 100% carbon neutral but does not skimp on performance or design. We and the ground crew appreciate the fantastic local support we have already received. Every single person's efforts count in our race to beat the world record”, stated Mr. Bethune.
