This
year, one can swing to tribal throbs at the Sooryakanthi exhibition
grounds of the Kanakakunnu Palace in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram,
which will be the venue of a unique tribal fest from January
19-26. Organised as part of the Kerala Tourism’s Nishagandhi
Festival, the tribal fest will showcase the State’s exclusive
tribal products and way of life. There will be a model tribal
village at the venue. Tribal art forms ranging from Gaddika
to Vattakali, products made by the tribal folk and their cuisine
will be showcased. Visitors can also avail of treatment by tribal
healers, including the traditional steam bath. Tribal artifacts,
weapons, ornaments, utensils, agricultural implements and traps
for wild animals will be on display.
The annual Nishagandhi Festival will be another visual treat
with well-known artists from all over India giving their best
at the beautiful Nishagandhi open-air auditorium. Perfromances
include Kathak by Nirupama Rajendra and Group; Bharatanatyam
by Alarmel Valli and Pallavi Krishnan and Group; a Carnatic
percussion ensemble by Haridwaramangalam A.K. Palanivel and
group; a Hindustani vocal jugalbandhi by Ustad Dilshad Khan
and Begum Parveen Sultana, and Vilasini Natyam by Yashoda Thakore.
Odissi by the Sutra Dance Theatre, Malaysia, Mohiniyattom by
Sunanda Nair and Manipuri dance by the Liyanda Folk and Classical
Academy will be the other attractions. The festival will conclude
with a fusion music concert by Rajesh Vaidhaya, Bickram Ghosh
and others on January 26. One can make reservations for seats
for the dance festival at Nishagandhi on the Kerala Tourism
website of Kerala Tourism. Leading hotels from the city and
Kovalam are putting up a food festival as part of the eight-day
fest.
